On Retail Sales

Retail Sales excluding autos up 1.2%, mostly driven by two things: Electronics & appliance sales and Gas stations.

Two things that stand out to me as drivers: prices for oil & nat. gas have been grinding higher, while the electronics space has probably been seeing upticks in volumes because of price reductions and the start of the holiday shopping season.

But there’s a new store sample being used this month, so I’m a little leery of comparisons month over month or year over year without knowing two things: sample composition of the two (how similar or different) samples and whether or not there’s any restatement done to historic data.

And the Census Bureau doesn’t tell you.

Transparent, much?
